Online Scrum Kanban Tool - Impressed by Scrumwise as a way to maintain scrum kanban boards online

Author: Darren Harvey

In most companies I work within now there is a need to deliver projects in an Agile fashion, yet the scrum teams are offshore and in different sites. We then resort to using task tracking tools such as sharepoint or resource tools with a scrum attachment, and recently using a product called mingle we found that we lost nearly 30 hours a week from my scrum teams and scrummasters in maintaining tasks.

Then Scrumwise caught my eye and I created a user and put together a simple backlog with some key stories and tasks and exposed it to a scrum team already struggling with using kanban boards.

Its gone down a treat and is really easy to use, update and put on a very large screen even touch screen. I totally recommend it and wish I we'd developed it ourselves. The pricing looks interesting at $6 a user per month.

So a typical 8 week release in four sprints with a team of 6 and a scrummaster will cost $84. This in comparison with the time to set up an open source tool on a unused server somewhere, is handsome. Obviously the flash issue may arise in banking environments.Take a look www.scrumwise.com

Purbeck, Poole and Old Harry Rocks

Look at these old maps of the Sandbanks and Studland a great example of times chaging

Author: Darren Harvey
I was facinated to see these three maps on a historical web site about Dorset. As I drive to the Third Time offices in Bournemouth through this area its amazing how much is has changed over the centuries. One of the great surprises in the reference to Studland castle at the site of the now stumpy and famous Old Harry Rocks.

Seeking a new OLAP relationship, nagging about Closing Balances again

Author: Darren Harvey
This is the third time I have created an OLAP database based upon subscription to services, where the main table never really stores the data for every customer in a nice form to pull out figures such as closing balance of active customers for the month. This is because in this system there are updates to subscriptions once every few months or so, to one or more subscriptions for each customer. Some customers never get updates and some are changing daily. The principle fact table stores these changes and again I have tried to struggle in creating a nice single fact table that can provide all my nice measures for the reporting system. In fact for every month I have a lovely breakdown of additions and removals. I can see every service and customer over the whole estate but how to find the closing balance on a given month has again proved to be a struggle.

Reached a new limit Microsoft’s OLAP Services

Author: Darren Harvey

Error. The expression contains a function that cannot operate on a set with more than 4,294,967,296 tuples.

This was a new one for me, as I understand this means that the MDX query I was running was trying to display more than 42 billion results on either the column or rows. The MDX query is being run against a large OLAP database of 8 million more or so customers so I would have expected this error if I’d pulled through the customer account number or something but of course you don’t get an error doing that.
